The CHL serves not only as a development league for the players on the ice but for the men wearing the stripes too and this past season, a handful of CHL officials earned time in the American Hockey League (AHL) including working some key games in that league’s ongoing playoffs.
In total, 49 AHL games were officiated by members of the CHL’s full-time officiating staff including four playoff games.
Leading the way is linesman John Grandt who worked the CHL Finals and also during the season worked 20 regular season games in the AHL and two post-season games and he is already slated to work Game’s 1 and 2 of the conference finals.
Other CHL linesmen working games in the AHL are Shaun Morgan (11 games), Bill McGoldrick (7 games), Kyle DeMaggio (5 games) and Cory Piche (2 games).
Numerous current AHL referees and linesmen cut their teeth in the CHL (or WPHL) including referees David Banfield, Chris Brown, Ian Croft, Ryan Hersey, Mark Lemelin, Jon McIsaac, Geoff Miller and Zac Wiebe and linesmen Chris Libett, Jean Menard among many others.
Developing all the way from CHL contracted officials (full-time) to the National Hockey League (NHL) include referees David Banfield, Gord Dwyer, Frederick L’Ecuyer and Mark Lemelin and linesman David Brisebois.
