Corpus Christi's Justin Quenneville Wins Man of the Year

Corpus Christi’s Justin Quenneville Named CHL Man of the Year

The Central Hockey League (CHL) announced today that Justin Quenneville of the Corpus Christi IceRays has been named the 2009-10 Central Hockey League Man of the Year.  The award is selected by the CHL front office based on nominations and supporting materials from member clubs.

The CHL Man of the Year award is ‘presented annually to the Central Hockey League player adjudged to have best exemplified strong leadership qualities on and off the ice, while making significant and noteworthy humanitarian contributions to his community’.

“The Central Hockey League is proud to honor Justin Quenneville for his contributions to the Corpus Christi community and surrounding areas,” said Duane Lewis, CHL Commissioner.  “We are always proud of the CHL players giving back to their communities, and Justin’s efforts are very worthy of this award.  He has touched and influenced many lives during his time with the IceRays, and wish we had the ability to share with everyone all of the stories of his generosity, kindness, and unselfishness.  This demonstrates that not only he is a great leader on the ice, he is an even better person away from the rink.”

"The IceRays organization is thrilled with the honor awarded to Justin,” said Pat Dunn, Corpus Christi’s Vice President/General Manager.  “He fits the description of the Man of the Year perfectly.  Justin has been nothing but great to our organization and has been a great ambassador for the team and represented the IceRays in a multitude of events throughout the city over the years.  Justin is true professional on and off the ice."

In his sixth professional season and fourth with the IceRays, Quenneville is the face of the IceRays community programs and has worked as the team’s representative for numerous charity events and community assist initiatives.  His relationship with Habitat for Humanity, the American Cancer Society, Big Brothers Big Sisters of South Texas, the Boy Scouts of America among many other groups has given the young and old a role model and a professional sports figure to cheer for.

During the ‘Street Hockey Challenge’ hosted by CPL Retail Energy, Quenneville led the charge for the event with the Boy Scouts who received the donated playing time with unlimited encouragement and endless autographs.

“He demonstrated true leadership and genuine deep caring for the game of hockey and the goal of the program, introducing kids to the sport who have never touched a stick or seen a net close up,” said Lisa Dornan, Director of Public Relations for CPL Retail Energy.

On the ice, his statistics speak for themselves as he became the franchises’ all-time points’ leader this season and serves as the team’s Captain.  Entering this season, Quenneville had nearly 200 points with the Rays and had scored 78 goals in the previous three seasons.

Despite his star status, Quenneville has not lost his approachability.  He regularly helps the elderly in his community with daily tasks that may be challenging to them such as taking out their trash, helping with groceries or picking up prescriptions.

In the off-season, he stays busy with various programs including the Corpus Christi Athletic Club Summer Camp Program where he participates by motivating and entertaining the kid’s while at the same time keeping the camp a safe environment.

“I’d like to thank Justin Quenneville for his involvement with the children that we serve daily and the time he dedicates to helping the children of this community,” said Tony Elizondo, Vice President of Satellite Operations – Big Brothers Big Sisters of South Texas.  “But in addition to his time commitment, he also helps our organization flourish by attending fundraiser events and match activities.”
