The starting defensemen are two of the top offensive defensemen in CHL history in Derek Landmesser and Bernie John.
Landmesser has played nine of the 10 seasons in the decade with the RiverKings leaving only for a brief stint in the United Hockey League (2001-02 with Muskegon). He ranks as the highest scoring blue liner of the decade with 488 points (85-403=488) and is second on among defensemen on the CHL’s all-time scoring list trailing only Hardy Sauter.
The six-time all-star was a part of the 2003 RiverKings CHL Championship scoring 10 points (1-9=10) in 14 playoff games. He was also named the 2001 CHL Most Outstanding Defenseman and during his nine years in the league has never scored fewer than 48 points. His best offensive season saw him reach 81 points (17-64=81), 2005-06. He ranks 25th on the league’s all-time points list and 10th on the all-time assist list.
John played in six seasons in the decade (four with Indianapolis and two with Corpus Christi) averaging more than 62 points per season during that time. The 2000-01 season saw the Sudbury, Ontario native post one of the top single seasons ever by a defenseman. It was the season after the Ice won the CHL Championship and John scored 23 goals with 85 points.
The six-time all-star won the CHL’s Most Outstanding Defenseman award in 2004 in his final season with the Ice totaling 76 points (17-59=76). His decade saw him amass 91 goals with 286 assists for 377 points.
The second team defensemen are Hardy Sauter (2000-05 with Oklahoma City) and Aaron Schneekloth (New Mexico 2003-04, Austin 2005-06 and Colorado 2006-present). Sauter is the all-time scoring leader among defenseman earning 290 of his career 669 points during the decade.
